why
Nature has a way of slowing us down... When we take time to sit beneath a tree, listening to bird songs, notice the light shifting across the water, or study the colors hidden within a single leaf, we become more present. Painting outdoors isn't just about making art- it's about seeing things. Plein Air in the Parks is a community art initiative that brings people into our local parks to slow down, connect with nature and other artists, and experience the joy of painting outdoors. Inspired by the centuries-old tradition of "en plein air" our gatherings invite artists of all skill levels to step away from their busy schedules and observe the landscape as it truly is- changing with every passing cloud, breeze, and season.
Where
We meet in parks throughout the Quad Cities to observe and create together. Each park offers its own personality, from winding trails and quiet gardens to rivers, woodlands, historical buildings, and prairie landscapes. By rotating through the parks across the Quad Cities, we not only celebrate the variety of our local green spaces but also make them feel more accessible. For many people visiting a new park alone can feel intimidating or unfamiliar. Gathering as a group to paint creates a welcoming environment where participants can build confidence and discover hidden gems.
WHAT
These sessions are designed to be relaxed, welcoming, and pressure-free. We begin with a brief introduction to the park and the plein air painting process before everyone is free to spread out and find a view that inspires them. This isn't a step-by-step class, but an opportunity to create at your own pace while enjoying the support of fellow artists. Most sessions last 1–2 hours, though you're welcome to stay longer. Bring your preferred art supplies, a chair or blanket, an easel or other support for your work, water, sunscreen, bug spray, and weather-appropriate clothing, as many parks have limited shelter. Basic supplies are also available for community use, so if you're trying plein air painting for the first time, we've got you covered. Most importantly, bring your curiosity... nature has a way of inspiring us when we slow down and really take the time to see it.
